Canadian new grad moving to MA - how much experience is needed?

Published

Hello all! I appreciate all feedback, tips and suggestions!

I am a recently graduated RN from a Canadian university. I'm currently working casual (per diem) as an RN in a rural hospital on a general med-surg unit and have been working here for about 6 weeks. Bad timing - my partner got a job in Boston and he will be moving there shortly. I understand that the job market in Boston is pretty saturated with RNs right now. My hope is to get a per diem job on a general med-surg unit in one of the big hospitals. I would also consider doing med-surg in a community hospital outside the city.

The decision I am currently trying to make is whether to make the move to Boston immediately with my boyfriend and try to get a job (after writing the NCLEX) OR if we should do long distance for a few months while I get some more experience under my belt. In your opinion, how many months does it take to look like more than a new grad to employers? Is 2-4 months okay? 6 months necessary? a year? two? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Also, has anyone found it more difficult as a Canadian to get a job rather than being an America?
