1. how did this type of work interest you and how did you get started? I started out in L&D 12yrs ago, worked in the nursery often, started doing private duty with high risk cardiac babies on days off. I have always enjoyed the little ones.

2. how did you get your job?what experiences have led you to your present position? Started doing private duty when one of my nursery babies was sent off due to congenital heart condition and mama was friend of mine, told me about the nursing company & due to my qualifications I got right on

3. do you find your job exciting or boring, why? I love my job, I have been with my company for 8yrs, some days are dull, others are non stop, depending the acuity of the case. I have cases from babies just on supplemental O2 to others with Trachs on vents and YES its in the home so its just me to depend on ... there is no time to second guess yourself.

4. how does a person progress in your field? what is a typical career path in this field or organization? You can move rom PDN to Clinical Coordinator to Nurse Supervisor to Location Director. PDN qualification minimum LPN, must be RN for the rest. Company also uses PT, OT, ST. Infusion Therapy as well, but RN degree req'd

5. what where the keys to your career advancement? how did you get where you are and what are your long range goals? Dependability, knowledge, Willingness to learn, Skill assessment, family can request you so your ability to get along with others os very important and can not emphasize enough you MUST know what you are doing.

6. what particular skills or talents are most essential to be effective in your job?how did you learn these skills? did you enter this position through a formal training program? how can i evaluate whether or not i have the necessary skills for a position such as yours. Must have prior. exp with pediatric/neonatal pts. ... your skills are evaluated by performing such things as trach change, G-Tube change, NG tube change, PICC Line, Central line, dressing changes, on a dummie, a very detailed written exam must be passed which covers dosage calculations, critical thinking, and assessment. I learned most of my skills on the job at my very first nursing job in the nursery and by taking NRP certification. Company also provides training on refreshers.

7. How would you describe the working atmosphere and the people with whom you work? Work with a wide variety of social classes & environments, must be easy to adapt

8. How has your job affected your lifestyle? Honestly, at times, esp recently, I lost my first baby it was very hard. I cried for days. I have been told that I cant get too attached but I say to those who tell me such nonsense that day I quit caring so much is the day I quit being a nurse. For the most part it is wonderful. Very flexible. One drawback is getting emotionally involved.
