Sure, what questions would you like addressed?

Hello, I am currently enrolled at Walden University in the MSN program-leaning towards nursing education... I need to ask a few brief "interview" questions as part of an assignment. Would you mind?? I would greatly appreciate your help...

Here are my questions:

  • What is your job title? What is your job description?
  • How would you describe the role you play in your job?
  • What specific issues are you currently grappling with at work?
  • As you look at the healthcare delivery system today, what changes would you like to see, and what suggestions can you make to a nurse leader for influencing those changes?
  • What policy-making roles have you played, public and private? What insights can you share from those experiences?
  • What types of certifications do you have?
  • What organizations are you involved in? What journals or listservs do you subscribe to? Why?
  • If you could make one suggestion or give one piece of advice to an emerging nurse leader, what would it be?

What is your job title? What is your job description? My title is nursing instructor. My job description is to teach in both the clinical and didactic component of the course in my specialized area, to participate in committees and university service, engage in curriculum design, academic advisement, and to research and publish.

How would you describe the role you play in your job? As with any job, much of what you "get out" of it depends on what you are willing to invest. I spend a great number of hours ensuring that the content I teach is relevant and current. I serve to guide, act as a role model, and offer support to learners.

What specific issues are you currently grappling with at work? Pay equity with other departments of comparable educational backgrounds.

As you look at the healthcare delivery system today, what changes would you like to see, and what suggestions can you make to a nurse leader for influencing those changes? I would like to see a system in which students and practicing nurses are involved in shaping policy and the future of healthcare, not just reacting to changes after the fact. I would encourage anyone to contact legislators, their local nursing union (or the newly formed national union), and to let their voice be heard on matters impacting healthcare and nursing. Contact and join your state and national nursing association. They have lobbyists in many cases to support the interests of nursing.

What policy-making roles have you played, public and private? What insights can you share from those experiences? I have been actively involved both in policy change at both a University level and at a state level. I would say to come to the table with a well researched position and do not be intimidated by naysayers.

What types of certifications do you have? I am a certified nurse educator and certified in my field of specialty, including PALS, NRP, and ACLS.

What organizations are you involved in? What journals or listservs do you subscribe to? Why? I am involved in state and national nurses' associations, Sigma Theta Tau, various university committees, local homeless outreach, and several listservs, one for educators and one focusing on technology. I subscribe to 7 journal, some of which are American Journal of Nursing, Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing, Nursing for Women's Health, and Nursing 2010.

If you could make one suggestion or give one piece of advice to an emerging nurse leader, what would it be? Never stop learning.
