California ADN BSN program

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello to everyone!

I am currently taking my pre-requisites in my college right now and I only need two more classes to apply for a nursing program. I need Physiology and Micro and I am currently taking Physiology, Medical term and Pharmacology in my current school. I dont have a very competitive GPA. My GPA right now is 2.5 overall and my Anatomy is a C. I kind of messed up with my Physiology and the first time i took it, i was passing, but i dont want to finish the course when i did not learn anything so i dropped it, the second time around i dropped it again because my professor was not really helping, i thought she was very distant and did not want to help at all. Well, first of, i would email her most of the time and come to her office hours but she never really talked to me so i dropped it. Right now im taking it and wants to earn an A or a B. I want to take microbiology during summer, so I could apply to a nursing program on the fall. I am kind of scared because nursing program is very hard to get into. Getting all my classes with an A or a B my overall would be 2.7. I really want to be a nurse, but getting this low GPA making me think i wont even get in to any program. Any suggestions? I am 23 years old.

Ahh, California... One of the most competitive state for nursing programs. It's going to be tough, but if this is your passion then do what it takes! Most BSN programs in California requires a minimum of a 3.0 to apply, and majority of the accepted applicants have GPAs that ranges from 3.7-4.0. Therefore, what I recommend is to retake pre-reqs to bump up your GPA. It might delay your initial application date, but if you score well, it will tremendously increase your chance in getting in a program. I'm not familiar with ADN programs, so i'm practically no help there. If money isn't an issue, then maybe consider for-profit schools (beware) or privates (some privates has very high standards too). Make sure you talk to your university's advisors before making a haste decision. Good Luck!

Hello there fellow Californian!

Enlighten is right, the nursing programs in California are quite competitive :( The CSUs accept roughly about 40-50 applicants per semester so you have to maintain a pretty high GPA. However, the ADN programs at community colleges have a lower GPA requirement. But due to the limited spaces, even the ADN programs are quite impacted. I would highly recommend you to retake anatomy for a higher grade! Perhaps even take a few easy GEs to boost up your GPA to a 3.0 if possible. To make up for your GPA you'd have to score pretty well on the TEAS. Scoring within the high 80's to 90's would greatly increase your chances of getting accepted! I would avoid for profit schools like West Coast University. I've heard horror stories about how the instructors there poorly prepare their students for the NCLEX & how they're not taken as seriously during clinicals as the public accredited schools.
