BUDGET CRISIS: Duplin Co. Schools Cutting 210 Positions

North Carolina is not a friendly state for public school teachers. Our state budget is 3.6 billion dollars in the hole and state employees are the ones being penalized to make up the shortfall. To make matters worse, our public schools rank in the lower 40s for quality (through no fault of the teachers). If you plan to move to NC and have school age children, factor in the cost of private education as a necessary expenditure. :twocents:

Duplin County Schools says it is forced to cut 210 positions because of budget cuts. Superintendent Dr. Austin Obasohan called a 3:00 p.m. news conference "to inform the community of decisions made at last night's special called meeting of the Board of Education regarding the budget crisis" and how it will impact Duplin County Schools.

The superintendent says the cuts are across the board and teachers will get notices today. Some teachers cried later at a countywide meeting to announce the cuts. Obasohan says the school system is faced with a $5 million budget shortfall with the definite potential for that going up.

The cutbacks include 102 state-funded regular teachers and teacher assistants, 28 exceptional teachers and assistants, and 80 federal program jobs which consist of clerical and janitorial type jobs. The school system currently employs 13-hundred people, 600 of those are teachers...
