BSN vs BS

Hi guys I am about to graduate from an ADN program in 2005 and I am already contemplating going for my BSN or BS degree.

Please someone inform me as to the difference from a nursing perspective.

I do want to eventually someday get a higher degree after this one so which one would be more benneficial if I want to go to medical school or get an MSN or MS a (BSN or BS)?

If your BS would be with a nursing major, there would be no difference. However, if the BS would be in another field, then you would be missing the material at the bachelor's degree level in nursing. You would be getting the bachelor's level content in another field.

When you apply for a Master's program in nursing, not having had the bachelor's level content in nursing is likely to be a problem. Some schools understandably require a bachelors in nursing (either BSN or BS with a nursing major) for acceptance into their MSN programs. Even if you found a school without that requirement, you would be "behind" your classmates who would have had that content.

I'm sorry, VANCIALA. When I responded to your private e-mail earlier today, I didn't place it in the context of this discussion and may not have answered as well as I can.

For going to medical school, you might be better off going the standard "pre-med" route at the bachelor's level. That would probably get you all the courses that most med schools look for. It would also give you the best chance to demonstrate how well you can compete with the other pre-med students for top scores.

But I would talk to the academic advisors of the pre-med program at the college of your choice before making a final decision. Let's face it "a bunch of nurses" like you will find on this bulletin board don't have expertise at getting into medical schools. For that expertise, you should go to the people who deal regularly with the med school admissions process.
