Breaking a 2 year contract

Published

I signed a 2 year contract at my present employer for a sign-on bonus. I've been there for a year.and need to move back to my home state. Contract states if I leave before 2 years sign-up bonus needs to be repaid. After a year 50% needs to be repaid. I really do not have the money to repay it. Has anyone had experience with this?

What's the reason you need to move?

Can you ask HR about what kind of repayment options you may have?

Is your moving the only feasible way to address those concerns? Many times people think it is, when there are other reasonable options.

If it truly is, though, perhaps talk to HR and lay it out for them. Tell them you had no intention of breaking your contract, but XYZ has now occurred, and you have to move. They may very well let you out of it without penalty. Can't hurt to ask.
