a blank slate

Hi there,

I have been a RN for many years but only practiced 8 years before "retiring" to have a family. Kids are almost up and gone and now I want to reenter the workforce. I am taking a RN refresher course over the next 20 weeks and I am very excited. I was a psych nurse and school nurse many years ago but I want to start over. My goal is to be a travel nurse and live in an RV with my husband and travel the US. I have 4-5 years before we will take off. After the refresher course I will be working 2 twelves a week local, getting skills back, etc.

This is my question...

What is the most needed type of nurse specialty out there?? How long do I need to work to be ready to travel? What other advice would you give a 40 something, starting all over?? As soon as I get the experience, should I switch over to a travel company even tho I will be staying put a couple more years? Any advice about companies in the central Fl area?

Thanks, and EXCITED :D

Hi:

It seems like the areas most in demand for travel are: Med/Surg, Tele, ER, ICU. Psych jobs are not nearly as plentiful. I am currently working a travel psych job in CA, but they are harder to find. You did not say how long you have been out of the field. You might have to work again for a year to be considered as a traveler.

Sounds like fun traveling in an RV.

Good luck 2U!

I am literally starting over. I graduated in 1986 and worked 8 yrs as a psych nurse. I don't want to do psych tho. Want to do regular ole med surge nursing! :-)
