Best School Nursing Books

Published

Hi! I have just accepted a (PS-3 through 8th grade) school nurse position (see my other post) and my entire background is in emergency nursing. Can anyone recommend any books that would be helpful to me during this transition? I am also looking for something with sample consent forms, MAR's, etc. Any info on policies & procedures would be great also....I'm just trying to be a sponge here, and soak up as much info as possible!

Thanks in advance!

The best way to make the transition is to join the state and national organization: http://www.nasn.org The Journal of School Nursing is part of the membership fee and is a great resource. Check also with your state association for state specific P&P guidelines.

A MUST have book for P&P is: N. Schwab & M. Gelfman (Eds.) Legal issues in school health services: A resource for school nurses, administrators and attorneys. Iuniverse.com. Avaiable from Amazon.com If you can only get one, get this one - many schools buy this as a health office reference book.

Another good website for school health P&P, but not specific to nursing concerns is: National Association of State Boards of Education: http://www.nasbe.org

NASN has many many resources & publications on their website. Just a couple are:

Janice Hootman (2004). Quality Nursing Interventions in the School Setting: Procedures, Models & Guidelines. 2nd Edition http://www.nasn.org

This is outdated, but includes sample forms:

Schwab, N. C., Panettieri, M. J., & Bergren, M. D. (1998). Guidelines for school nursing documentation: Standards, issues and models. Scarborough, ME: National Association of School Nurses http://www.nasn.org

There is a brand new CD and book out for school nurse care plans:

Silkworth, C., Arnold, M., Harrigan, J. & Zaiger, D. S. (2005). Individualized healthcare plans for the school nurse. North Branch, MN: Sunrise River Press. http://www.schoolnursebooks.com/

Another MUST have book that will be out shortly that has sample policies, consent forms is:

Schwab, N. C., Ruben, M., Maire, J. A., Gelfman, M. H. B, Bergren, M. D., Mazyck, D. & Hine, B. (2005). Protecting and sharing student health information: Guidelines for developing school district policies and procedures. Kent, OH: American School Health Association.http://www.ashaweb.org

There will be a School Nurse textbook out in 2006:

Janice Selekman: School Nursing F.A. Davis,

0-8036-1403-9

Good luck!
