I'm currently in the accelerated 2nd degree BSN program at Georgetown Univ in DC, graduating in May '11. My partner would like us to consider living in Miami after I graduate, so I need to start gathering background information to help us decide.
- What are starting hospital salaries like for new BSN grads around Miami?
- Do those hospitals hiring new BSN grads provide additional orientation/residency training?
- Which hospitals are a good place to work, and which should be avoided like the plague :-)
I'm also concerned about the cost/value of housing in South FL. House and condo prices still seem to be tanking there, and condo fees seem to be high compared to metro DC. So I'm not sure about the stability of the local economy.
I'd especially like to hear from anyone who's moved to south FL after living around DC for awhile.
Thanks!

Wow I can't believe no one has posted to you yet. I'm sorry I'm so late. Miami is not a good place to come if you have no experience or if you want to move to a new feild within nursing. This place is as dried up as a dead fish in the middle of a salt filled desert. I hope you have not already moved. The starting salary used to be $22.50/hr in 2006 by 2009 it was down to $19.00 now an RN with a BSN may find themselves being offered $16.25/hr.
Stay out of Miami. Idiots here love to say that, "it's not what you know it's who you know" and everybody knows that that is not the full story. Miami is just dried up and no one wants to admit it.

Some folks have their opinions about Miami...if you read through Sunspot's other posts, you can definitely see a lot of frustration with the situation down here in Miami. It's not unique to nursing industry; FACT - Miami is the worst job market in the country, and has been for a couple of years. Now, I can't speak for Sunspot's experiences, but there ARE new grads that get hired down here without scholarship programs; I know some. There are also many that wait.
If you don't have a support system in Miami, I'd think twice about uprooting and coming down on your own. It would be really tough to have to move back because your resources dried up and you couldn't find a job. If you're able to support yourself by some other means, and are prepared for the fact that you may walk right into a job or wait for a year, or anything in between, then I'd say by all means go for it.
