I am in my OB rotation... i will be in the nursery this week and i was just wondering what normally goes on in the nursery, if there's anything that i need to be aware of that i won't find in the books.....????? I feel so lost. I've never had any type of association with anyhting remotely r/t OB and so far I have hated every minute of this rotation! Can any of you guys give me so tips/pointers to make it thru this rotation w/ out pulling my hair out????? ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!

Honestly,

I loveeed my nursery rotation. Basically we took their morning vitals (Temps, HR, RR and billirubin level) and changed them. After that the ones who needed feeds went out for feeds, if mom was in shower or somethin like that we fed them in the nursery. The pediatricians came in to evaluate them at different times because theres 3 drs offices that see the newborns. At that time if one of their patients needed a circumcision it was done. Also we'd give the Hep B vaccines if needed. It was pretty cool and I loved my time. Also in my rotation if there was a delivery the nursery nurse went to down there so I saw a few newborn assessments.Just relax and dont panic.

I just finished my nursery rotation last week and it wasn't a bad experience for someone who wants no part of OB/PEDS! I enjoyed it really.

1. Head to toe assessments

reflex assessments; rooting, sucking, swallowing, step, babinski's,

fontanels, assess for congenital abnormalities

2. vitals; no blood pressure needed

3. gestational ages you have to do these they are actually very simple and indicate rather or not the baby was large for gestational age, small for gestational age, or average for gestational age.

4. cord care and assessments

5. feeding assessment

6. elimnation assessment

7. hearing screens, immunizations and lab values these should be in the chart

8. you instructor will most likely want to know about the pregnancy, labor and delivery, and the method of delivery and about any complications.

you have to change diapers and assess if it's meconium or transitional stool. breastfed babies stool will look differently. Basicly nothing different than you would assess for an adult it's just age appropriated for newborns. Relax you will really enjoy it.
