Becoming a nurse again?!

Published

I graduated from nursing school in 1992 with an Associates degree. I have been out of nursing since 1997 but am thinking about reentering nursing. I have kept my license current and active. What would be required of me in order to go back into nursing? I know there's much that I don't know due to all of the medical advances that have been made and there's probably much that I've forgotten, as well. Would anyone even hire a nurse that has been on leave as long as I have? Thanks in advance for the advice and suggestions!

Depending on where you are located, there may be a refresher course available. I took one many years ago when I was out of nursing for eight years due to illness. Since you posted in the LTC forum, I'm assuming that's where you want to work , and you might not even need to do that. There is still a nursing shortage. Many places will work with you until you feel comfortable.

You probably haven't forgotten as much as you think you have. Good luck!

Sorry, I jumped from LTC to Hospice Forums, but they are very similar. My advice is the same!

I'm in the same boat as you only I've been out of nursing a lot longer. I have my NY license active but to get the MN endorsement I need a refresher course. I became a hospice volunteer and then I shadowed a hospice RN. I signed up for a refresher course but it got cancelled due to not enough interest. I was told to call back at the end of this month which I plan to. The RN I shadowed was very encouraging and said she would love to train me so I haven't given up on what I believe to be my calling. I hope it works out for you...go for it!! :)
