Hi! A friend of mine and I are graduating in May 2010 from UF BSN. We are considering Austin and Seton hospitals. Does anyone have any advice about Seton or surrounding hospitals, residency programs, when to apply, chances of being accepted, etc??
ANY info would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Seton has a very competitive new grad residency called Versant. Check their website frequently. I believe the June 2010 cohort application will be released right after Christmas. Apply early, but know that they will not start interviewing until about 2 months after they start taking applications.
If you have your heart set on a specialty to start, Seton probably won't be your best bet. I have talked with 2 different recruiters and they have said that they will not be hiring into: NICU, ER, mother/baby, or L&D. There is a waiting list to get into the ICU.
They really want you to start off in med/surg and put 2 years in before requesting a transfer. They also said your chances are better if all 3 of your top choices are med/surg. Apparently they received over 500 applications for ~60 spots for the October cohort.
I don't mean to sound like a Debbie Downer, but that is all the info I have, straight from the recruiters. The other hospital system in Austin isn't hiring GNs, so those of us who want to go straight to a specialty have to move.
Such is life. Hopefully the GN outlook will be MUCH better for you next year!
