Asking my old manager for a new job

I had a manager leave my current med surg unit to go into MICU. Before her departure I told him how awesome that was and that I wish I could go with her. She and I were on good terms. She said to hit her up when I am eligible to transfer.

Come October I’ll be able to apply for the med surg to ICU transition program. They only take like 5 nurses so I want to make sure I’m as competitive as possible. I want to write an email to my old manager asking her basically, how can I get the job. How can I stand apart from the rest of the applicants?

Anyone have any advice on how I should word the email?
