AS in RN vs. BS in RN

U.S.A. Hawaii

Hi, I'm a starting freshman @ LCC, doing my pre-req's and co-req's. I've read the some threads here and at forumshawaii.net...so just to clarify, there isn't much difference in the pay level of a staff nurse if they're 2yr. RN or 4yr. RN?...however, if you wanted to get a higher position than a staff nurse, you'd need a BS?

And wouldn't you have a greater chance of getting hired if you had a BS?

Or would it be better to spend those 2 extra years working at a CNA or LPN job so that you can earn money while getting your foot in the door for the RN job?

Thanks!

first off, what is lcc? and i'm guessing you're on oahu? when a person writes an original post, i really appreciate it when he/she does not abbreviate. i value clarity.

i've been reading these forums for a year, and i think this is the smartest question a student has ever asked: or would it be better to spend those 2 extra years working at a cna or lpn job so that you can earn money while getting your foot in the door for the rn job?

yes, absolutely, start working as a cna. it's the smartest thing you can do today to get a job in the future.

Thanks for your speedy reply! Sorry I wasn't clearer, I'm attending Leeward Community College on Oahu.

And thanx for the advice...I think I'll try that down the road when I've got my CNA or LPN. :)

Lisa From Maui:

I've been reading some of your threads, and it looks like you're a nurse from Arizona who moved here early this year, and are currently working on your RN?

I also noticed your posts about not being allowed to work as a CNA after you received your LPN license...so would you reccommend working as a CNA alongside of going to nursing school? (b/c I think that would kinda be hard...)

Thanks!
