Army Officer Basic Course (OBC)

Can anyone offer information regarding Army OBC at Fort Sam Houston? I have already visited the OBC homepage, and wanted to hear about personal experiences. I did not ask the recruiters because they have not attended OBC, and are not nurses.

What can I expect in terms of physical training, classroom activities, drill, etc?

Should I bring a computer?

Will there be time off during OBC? (should i bring my car?)

After OBC, I will be stationed at Fort Bragg, NC. Should I live on base? Any advice as to where to live if not on base. I have yet to be told as to where I will be assigned, (Womack Army Hospital or with the 28th CSH). My interim goals would be to work on a Forward Surgical Team (FST), and go to jump school. Any thoughts or advice on how to achieve my goals...BTW, my MOS and skill identifier is 66HM5 (emergency nurse).

Thank you in advance

Jason Graham

Hello LT Graham! I went through Army OBC in '98. I'm sure it's still pretty much the same though. PT was 3 times a week as a group, also you should expect an APFT within a week of arrival. Classes are not very difficult. keep up with the handouts and you should do fine. If you finished nursing school you should have no problem with OBC. I would bring a computer and definately bring your car! You will have plenty of time off and will want to explore San Antonio. I'm sure you have heard all about the riverwalk so I won't bore you.

If you are single then living on post at Bragg will not be an option. This is what I'd do: find out if any others in your class are going to Bragg, and see about renting a big house together. That's what I did at my first assignment. Good luck with everything else!

Thanks Neil, just what I needed. Some of my other question have been answered within the last week, (obc website updated).

Again, I appreciate the info, and thanks for your service.

Hey 1Lt Graham,

I will be attending OBC next month. I was told by a recruiter that it was "like a big party". I will be at Ft. Stewart after OBC(rapid deployment post I have been told). I just looked on the OBC website yesterday and they still have not posted if we will be billeted on or off post.

And the being single thing definately means that you have to live off post. I have been fortunate that I have been assigned a sponsor at my follow-on assignment already and she has contact me and sent me a welcome packet.

Looking forward to possibly meeting you and seeing you in class. Happy holidays, don't eat too much, I hear that we will have a weigh in when we get there.

I was with the 28th CSH during the first year in Iraq. You will be deploying this year after OBC. If I am not mistaken they will be next up in the rotation to Iraq.

I can put you in contact with many nurses from the 28th if you wish. Let me know when you have your AKO email or IM me with a phone number and I will definitely help you out. I was at Fort Sam Houston for OBC and Phase I of Anesthesia school (Mar 2000 to June 2001). I know the area well.

Talk to you later,

Mike

Military Girl-

First of all, congratulations on the BSN. I'll see you in January. I think this is going to be a great experience. However, as far as big party goes, I will (in this instance) take the "wait and see" approach. If the oppurtunity presents itself, I will definitely indulge.

Mike-

let's just say you are correct, (about the next rotation.) The LtCol at HRC, that I spoke to you before about has already informed me of the situation. I will bend your ear for advice later on that one. I havnt been told wether I will be at Womack ED or the 28th CSH. So far, the comments regarding the ED have all been positive. My wish is to to move away from the typical hospital enviornment.

Talk to you guys soon,

j

If you are assigned to the CSH you are FORSCOM and will be working at WOMACK regardless (as borrowed military manpower or BMM). In CONUS the CSH is just a caretaker. The actual hospital is non-functioning in peacetime (you don't set up temper and care for patients when you have a hospital right there). I will be in San Antonio for the Advance Course during the time you are at OBC I can provide you further detail at that time. Be careful of what you hear, if you are PROFIS (assigned to the MEDDAC) you can deploy with anyone at anytime. PROFIS stands for Professional Filler System (look it up on the internet). You will deploy, its just a matter of when and with whom.

See you at Fort Sam,

Mike

If your orders say you are assigned to the Meddac at Bragg, then more than likely you will be PROFIS to either the 28th, 86th, or 228th CSH (all are east coast regional command CSH's). I will be at OAC from March to May, so I can most assuredly help you out then. Again, anything I can help you with, let me know. I have to attend OAC prior to going to my doctorate program. Your primary duty is at the Meddac (the hospital). You are going to have to be "squeaky" in order to get your slot for jump school. The FST at Bragg is the 82nd FST, I know the CRNA there. I can try and help you by providing who is the point of contact for the FST.

Mike

Hello,

I'm military girl who will also be attending OBC in January. After that I will be assigned to Ft. Stewart. I have heard that this is a rapid deployment post. I will also be assigned to the MEDDAC at Stewart. Any experience there? Do they deploy or am I safe? I wear the uniform so I will strap on my ruck and go if they say so. Just would like to know your thoughts on this.

I stand corrected...

Mike (MWbeah) has just confirmed what your recruiter has told you about OBC. See you there...
