I am a prospective nursing student looking to get their Associates Degree in Nursing. I have my bachelors degree in another field and I would like to enter the Army as a officer and take advantage of their tuition remibursement program. Can I enter into the service with an ASN or must I have a BSN in addition to my first bachelors degree.

You can get into the Reserves with an ASN, but if you want to go active duty, I am pretty sure you will have to have a BSN (or a MSN if you wan to go that route). The Loan repayment program will only cover loans related to your nursing degree though...you should talk to a recruiter to get the particulars about your situation.

i just finished an accelerated nursing program that required that i have a prior degree (in addition to other pre-requisites) because of the pace of the program. i therefore argued (and won!) the debate on whether or not my first degree was a part of my nursing degree. the army is paying for both. so i guess i would say there are exceptions.
pretty sweet.
Sal, That is great! I assume you went through an accelerated MSN program? I can see them allowing that your first degree was a requirement for the second one. Seems I heard someone else doing something like this too. It probably depends on how much you push for it, and how bad they want you. hehe.
The original poster is suggesting that she/he has a degree and is looking to get an ASN to go into nursing... an ASN does not require the prior degree, so I have my doubts as to whether they will pay for it.
Bottom line is, you are right, there are always exceptions, and you will never know until you ask!
