Wow, I got curious (still in school) about what was out there right now for RNs and a 30 second search got this from careerbuilder.com:

The hospitals aren't posting pay (wonder why?), and most of these look like placement agencies or other offices, but darn, I wasn't sure if Arizona really paid this much for nurses. I've been hearing 45-60k in arizona, but this is more like 60-80k/year!
By the way, there were MANY more jobs (20 pages), but these results only show the jobs that are posting a pay range...

Ok, first of all, This is probably per diem/ or foat pool/ or on call (whatever you want to call it WITHOUT BENEFITS. Yes, that is the standard for nursing salaries without benefits in phoenix ( I have seen higher). However, I have been a nurse for 21 years and in ICU for near 18 years, and as a staff nurse with benefits, my base salary doesn't hit the 38.00/hr rate. However, benefits are worth a great deal. So is guaranteed time on your own unit without having to float all over kingdom come and hell to boot. I guess it depends what you're looking for. I make near that as staff after 20 years in the field, but I could see how per diem salaries would attract the new grad who is only making $23.00/hr. At the same time, I would hope a new nurse would want some experience under her belt, before she felt she could float wherever was needed and function safely.
Yeah I figured something like that. I'm in a unique position now where my income makes the switch from IT to nursing a little difficult. Those sorts of pay definitely become alluring, although I do yearn for the hospital treatment, I'm a little more familiar with it. However, at the current time, my gf and kids have insurance through the state while I'm on my own, so trading higher pay for no bennies is something I've become accustomed to

Lots of opportunity to make money in nursing. Some work overtime and others pull down several jobs to supplement the income.
I went to a local conference last week and the speaker was a sleep researcher and mentioned some hospitals are so concerned about medical errors and the connection to excess hours worked that they are checking W2 statements. She said some nurses were working so much OT that they were pulling in $150k/yr. I don't imagine they had much of a life however.
