Are any new grads having problems finding work in Texas?

U.S.A. Texas

I am on allnurses.com quite a bit lately and have noticed many new grad nurses are having difficulty finding work. I begin nursing school next week, so I have a couple of years before job hunting begins for me. I know alot can change between now and then; however, just out of curiosity, are new graduate nurses in Texas having as many problems finding work as in other states?

IDK. All I can say is that Texas is recruiting new grads from the northern states, so there are prob still jobs. Who knows what the market anywhere will be in a few years.

I know I'm not in Texas, but in Georgia...all of my classmates are having trouble! I am the only one out of 19 people with a job and working (we graduated in june and licensed in mid-july). My secret is.....FIND A JOB BEFORE YOU GRADUATE! Ga has nurse extern programs (you go to work after first year of nursing school) which pays and guarantees work! maybe you could check that out in TX.

Even I was working as a CNA at a local hospital and was lucked out when I graduated and ended up with no job... and here I am, still no job. There's no guarantee, do as much as you can. I've completed 2 preceptorship outside of nursing school and some of my classmates who don't have the same experience as me have jobs. Depends on your luck...

I live in Texas, from what I'm hearing from the new grads (which we are still hiring), there are jobs, and many more than in the North. But due to the fact that there are new grad jobs; the applications are far outpacing the openings (dozens per spot). We get applications from around the country. It is now strongly competitive; in the past it was just mildly competitive.

Still better news than in many areas that I hear are just flat not hiring new grads if they are even hiring.

Depends on where you are from what i am hearing. If you are in a small towns then find a hospital, nursing home or specialty area that you interested and started working there. Some of my classmates had positions created for them. But get in there and start working it will more than help your chances of getting a job. where are you?

I'm a newer RN in the DFW area with 4 years of LVN experience and have had difficulty landing a full-time RN position in a hospital. I have a part-time weekend job at a nursing home and a PRN gig at a small rehab hospital, but there have been no full-time offers of employment for me at this time.

hi so i am a soon to graduate lvn (december) and i am looking to move to the dfw area, with you experience how is the job outlook for lvn's in that area hospitals vs. nursing homes, of course i plan to get my rn also but i want to get the best oportunity possible while i am an lvn

just curious, answers given today may not be depict what the job market will be in 2012, most hospitals are expanding and new ones are getting build. to answer your question, yes there are major problems in big cities in texas because a) more people are graduating from nursing school, failure is not an option in this economy b) people with jobs are not retiring and are doing everything to hand on to their jobs c) there is a major influx of nurses with tons of experience coming from other states such as califonia, arizona, oklahoma etc that make new grads look obsolete. employers will hire a person with 3-5 yrs experience for the same price rather than a new grad.

i know it sounds bad, but i have to tell it as it is

While I am new to Texas during my job search I say many new grad opportunities and internships at all of the big name hopsitals in the DFW area. I just got hired at Methodist and they had 4 interns go to my unit alone and in orientation they also spoke on the prospected shortage in the next few years...so if you have a few years to go...just hang in there..thejobs are there for new grads..:nurse:

I graduate this November as an LVN. I've been promised a job on my clinical site starting around $ 20 in the Fort Worth area. Its alot of job opportunities in Nursing Homes around the DFW area

North Houston... very rough right now for new grads. Most of the big hospitals have twice yearly residencies (which are EXTREMELY competitive), and that is it for new grads. If you dont get a residency, you are SOL. My first interview invitation came from a very small town outside of Houston. They are able to hire new grads, but only 1 at a time for the entire hospital.
