Applying With A Low GPA

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello. I'll try to sum up my situation as short as possible.

- about a 3.04 cumulative gpa currently (including summer sem)

- no healthcare experience (currently hoping to get response from Kaiser about my app)

- part time worker in elementary school

- planning to take the TEAS this November

- Applying this fall

- California student

Basically, I messed up my first year of college. This year, I'm trying to redeem myself with all my classes from this summer, fall, and spring semesters. Since I don't have any previous degrees or school background, my application will probably be bare minimums (grades, TEAS, work, hopefully volunteer). Application time just started two days ago, so I'm just wondering if there's any hope for me to get in? (and I know this is a long shot, but...) What schools am I more likely to get into with a lower GPA?

I'm planning to apply to CSU's and private universities.

I live in California too!! I just applied for spring and will soon apply for fall as well. I suggest you research the CSU schools and their selection criteria. Some of them won't look at your cumulative scores like CSU Sacramento and CSU long beach. Instead, they look only at your prerequisites GPA! CSU's are primarily based on your stats so for those that do look at your cumulative GPA, it might be hard to get in. Your best bet is to offset this with a very high TEAs score and good work experience like getting a CNA license or be a medical assistant. Private universities are more lenient with your GPA but they are a lot more expensive. But if you're willing to spend the money to get your degree, go for it. If you really want to be a nurse, you'll find a way to get there. Don't give up!
