Applying to Ontario Second Entry Nursing 2020/21

World Canada CA Programs

Hi everyone! I've been following tons of threads here in these forums and I've kind of accumulated some questions if anyone could help and answer them!

I'm currently in my second year of university at York University and I am doing a BSc in Kinesiology and Health Science! I'm super concerned because first year didn't go that great for me in terms of GPA (I only have a 6.3/9.0 or approximately maybe a 3.0). My grades have drastically improved since first year (woo, better mental health can do wonders for your GPA) and in all honesty, the way my courses are going right now, I'm aiming to get quite A's in them!!

I'm planning on applying to second entry nursing this year in Fall 2020 (I will be in my third year) to primarily schools in the GTA. My top picks are UofT, YorkU and Humber! The other schools I'm applying to are Western, Ottawa and Trent-- and perhaps U of Calgary (which I know isn't in Ontario LMAO)!

1. Does anyone happen to know how many people are accepted into any of these second entry nursing programs?

2. I know it's a long shot but if I am applying with a 7.00/9.00 or 3.3/4.00 GPA to these programs with volunteer experience (community first responder) and A's and B+'s in the main prerequisites, is there a chance I would get ANY offer back?

3. For these programs, does anyone know when acceptances are generally sent out? I may have stalked older forums and I'm assuming February/March/April/May?

Thank you everyone!!

Hi @underwaterr!

First year is a tough transition for many students, so I wouldn't worry too much about your first year GPA. As long as you show improvement in the terms after that's what matters (which you did, that's awesome!).

I applied to York and Humber's second entry nursing programs for the fall 2020 entry. To answer your first question, from what I gathered York takes 150 students per year and receives about 500-700 applicants, whereas Humber takes 85 students per year.

I think you have a chance of getting offers if you do really well in your pre-requisites. I applied in my final year of undergrad with a GPA of 3.3-3.4 in my last 60 credits with a majority of A's for pre-requisites, have pretty decent ECs, and received offers from York and Humber. Keep in mind that the pool of applicants is different every cycle, so the cut-off GPA can vary. These two schools don't require volunteering/ECs or references so grades are more weighed on. York also requires you to take the CASPer test and you are compared against applicants based on your score. I've read from past forums that UofT really looks at your experiences and the supplementary application.

For your third question, yes! They begin to send offers out in February and continue from there.

Hope I helped! And good luck on your journey (applications and undergrad)! ?
