Applying for jobs from out-of-state

For the past year I have worked as an RN in another state where I got into this great residency program, though I have kept my apartment in San Francisco. I did so because as a new grad, I wasn't getting any job interviews in the Bay Area so I thought I might as well get some paid experience & then return. I still have a valid California license.

Now that I have 1 year's acute care experience, is there any way I can get a job in the Bay Area if I apply from afar? Or will I need to quit my out-of-state job, move back, and apply from CA? I would be especially interested to hear from those who work in hiring - do you automatically throw out resumes from people who currently have jobs out of state (and therefore maintain a dwelling far away)?

Also, I've been applying for jobs through Indeed.com, but I've NEVER had a response - is it better to apply on the hospital website?

I've had decent luck applying through multiple routes but the best responses have come from jobs I've applied for through hospital sites. It's a big waiting game when you are applying out of state. It can become very time consuming and if the hospital doesn't want to fly you there but wants you to you to fly in for an interview, etc it can become very expensive. Be patient and the right opportunity will come along. Best of luck!
