applying to crna for the first time

Specialties CRNA

Published

HI,

I applied ODU (CRNA) in VA for the first time in DEC. I have 3 years emergency room experience and will have 1 year ICU experience. I am looking for advice on applying to colleges. I have read many articles and have talked to a couple of nurses that have applied for their CRNA, but still looking for answers.

In FEB. the school sends out their notification and their interviews begin in March. Many nurses that I talk to say they werent accepted on their first attempt and had to reapply. Anyone make it on their first attempt?

thanks, :)

I think that you will receive this advice from several people on this forum. If at all possible, do not limit yourself to one school. Your chances are much better if you can apply to several. One reason is , if you interview at several places, you will gain valuable experience for you next interview. That first one, you can be quite nervous. Like anything, the more you do it the better you get at it. Another reason to interview at several places is because, the schools like to know that you are dedicated to getting into school. I was asked how many I applied to in all of my interviews. When I would tell them that I applied to 12 schools, they would say, " you really want to get in don't you ". I actuallly stopped interviewing after my 3rd one, because I was accepted to my first choice. At that point I had 3 more interviews scheduled, but cancelled them. By reading this forum, you will realize that most people that are interviewing, are interviewing at several places. Alot of these people are your competition, however, everytime some gets accepted somewhere, that increases your chances somewhere else. Although alot of the people here are you competition, everyone is very courteous and willing to give advice. So, apply to as many places as you can and good luck to you.

My only advice for getting in on your first try is do everything you can to make your resume stand out from the pile. You've worked in the ER, so take the CEN if you haven't, take the CCRN, anything you can do to make it easier to choose YOU from the list of applicants. Good luck!!

I interviewed at ODU last year for early admissions and did not get accepted It was definitely my first choice but have since been accepted at another school. If you get an interview it is strictly a get to know you interview lasting about 15 minutes with three interviewees and is totally stress free not one clinical question. any more questions IM me

Hi to you!

I applied to ODU last year. I was acceped to VCU for the Fall 2005. All I can say is, if you really want this, keep trying! I was denied 5 times before acceptance.

I have a great GPA, GRE, and I have been working in a cardiac surgery ICU for only 1.5 years.

I wasn't accepted last year and I am glad. I was not ready! And , I realized it in my interview.

Please let me know if I can help!

I was accepted at Saint Mary's University in Minneapolis for May 05'. ODU has a very good program that let's CRNA's specialize (rural, trauma, OB or whatever) there regional experience is top notch because they utilize military hospitals as well. The interview will not take more than 15 minutes tops and will not cover one single clinical question.

I agree with DSAC. Definitely don't limit yourself to one school. I applied to several and even though I didn't get accepted at my first choice I still got in and am so glad that I applied and interviewed at more than one school. I also have to agree that you get a little better with each interview. Each place I interviewed asked me how many schools I applied to. I definitely think they want to see that you are really wanting to get in. They want to see dedication and commitment. It is well worth the effort. Even though it is stressful and we are just starting clinicals I absolutely love it. If you have any specific questions about interviewing I would be happy to help.

Good Luck!
