Can you possibly enlighten me as to what to expect next semester? I'm worried about the degree of difficulty being higher and not being able to keep up. I've done really well in my first semester...just feeling a little anxious approaching the second. I'm hoping that if I hear some thoughts from people who have gone through it already, I might be somewhat at ease. I'll be doing Med/Surg and Psych.

Thanks alot!!:)

In my first med-surg clinical we were assigned one patient and were responsible for passing their oral meds, doing a head to toe assessment, changing linens, giving baths, and doing vital signs. We did chart the assessment in the computer, but the RN was responsible for doing one as well. We picked up the patient assignment the night before clinical so we could start our paperwork and have an idea of how to plan care for the client.

For my psych class we rotated through adult inpatient, geriatric inpatient, chemical dependency, and out-patient mental health. We did not pass medications. What the teacher was mostly interested in was whether we could communicate therapeutically with patients with mental illness.

Good Luck.

Specializes in NICU.

In Med/Surg We started with two patients and by the end of the semester we were takeing care of three. We were able to perform any skills that we had been checked off for.( IM injections, SQ injections, NG tube feeding , NG tube insertion, Foley insertion, Hanging IV bags, IVPB bags and pushing IV drugs also starting IV's ,wound care giving PO medications ,head to toe assessments, vital signs and chart) In the Med/Surg class I found it easier than Fundamentals. If you know your patho it is not as hard.

Good Luck
