Anyone accepted into Nursing Program without Volunteer Experience?

Just curious if anyone was accepted into a nursing program (which one too) without volunteer experience?

I got into CSU Stanislaus in Turlock, Ca and I never had any medical experience... It was a point based system and if you have great grades and a good teas score you'll have a much better shot. best of luck.

Thanks for the response!!! =) If I could give super kudos, I would! =) I just feel sometimes that everyone I meet who wants to be a nurse has been in the medical field or has had exposure of several years. So this gives me hope.

Specializes in ED.

I also had zero experience in the medical field and got accepted to two Bachelor's programs, I wasn't sure about how they weighted everything, but both applications did ask about volunteer/work experience.

Specializes in Perinatal.

I was accepted into two ADN programs. Although I did have medical/volunteer experience, it only weighed in on one program. The other was a lottery; all you needed was to meet the minimum GPA and TEAS score requirements.

Yah it really depends if its a lottery system or point based system... Lottery...all luck. If you cn apply for point based systems you probably have a better shot of getting in. You really dont need experience, but it does help. I know what you mean about not having experience though...I got a lot of the "oh, you dont have any medical background? Good luck then." Yah that was annoying...but hey I got in and I know a lot of people that have as well so dont give up hope! If you can..just volunteer once a month or something so you can put it down as some experience. My school asked for both paid experience and unpaid. Best of luck :)

Thanks so much for the encouragement and the posts! I'm more encouraged now that I have a chance to get into a program. ^_^

San Jose State only takes your TEAS, last 30 units GPA and 5 pre-req GPA into consideration. No work/volunteer experience, no bonus for male or female or bilingual or ethnicity. Just straight ranking by your grades.

But, I would strongly recommend trying to get some experience in a clinical field. There are plenty of posts on here from people who put in all the work and then freaked out in clinicals because things were too yucky/sad/stressful. Be sure you know what you're getting into!
