Any US-trained CNMs qualified and working abroad?

Published

I'm wondering if there are any CNMs here who completed their education in the US but are currently working as qualified midwives in another country. I will shortly be entering an Accelerated BSN/MSN program to become a CNM and anticipate that my career will largely be in the US - but I am curious as to whether or not I would be able to work as a registered midwife abroad if I wanted to.

I realize that each country has its own protocols (and it doesn't look very promising in terms of US CNMs being able to transfer our credentials elsewhere), but I just thought I would see if any of the helpful members of AN could help me cut through all of the confusion!

If anyone here is US-educated but currently registered as a midwife elsewhere, particularly in Europe, it would be great to hear what country you're working in and what the basic process was for getting qualified. If not, well then perhaps I have my answer right there...:)

So i'm not working as a midwife, but i was just researching this the other day. I found this website about working in the UK. I'm not sure about other countries.. but it looks like it is possible to be a midwife in the UK with CNM training. You might just have to go through a training program at a uni in the UK.

Hope this helps. :)

I know in Canada, they require you to be licensed in whatever country you're coming from, and then take a roughly 9-month "bridge" course before registering as a Canadian midwife.
