I'm an RN with 3 years experience but not recent. I worked 12 years ago but then had my children and decided to take a break from nursing to raise them. Now that they are older, I'm looking to get back to work and took an RN refresher course. I've applied to so many places here in San Diego and have not even been called for an interview. I haven't even had the courtesy of a reply from 80% of the places I've applied and the ones that do respond send a standard "We have found someone better qualified" email. It's gotten to be so impersonal. I remember when you could go down to the human resources office and talk to a real person and apply but it's all done online now. Does anyone know of anyplace actually hiring in San Diego?

I'm looking to move to SD in a year so I stalk the hospital job boards pretty frequently. I have to say there are a lot of job openings. Sadly you're up against people who are currently working. A lot has changed in the last 12 years and that could be impacting your hiring status. I would personally look outside the hospital for job opportunities to get you back in the game.

Plus a lot of postings are either for internal applicants only or are just for show (i.e., they've pretty much decided on someone but have to post the job for X days/conduct X interviews to make HR or the union happy).
Try agency/registry nursing. It'll help you get current experience to be a more viable candidate for other jobs.
