Any pointers on MUSC CRNA school?

Published

I'm an aspiring RN that would like to further my career as a CRNA and has 1 and 1/2 year of experience and would like some insight on applying and interviewing with MUSC CRNA program..any advise is welcome!!! :wink2:

Specializes in CCU, CVICU, SRNA.

I interviewed there earlier this year.

They give you a exam with about 20 questions. You take it in a room by yourself before your interview. It is mainly about general critical care knowledge (ex. PA pressures, ABGS, etc). You definitely need to brush up on your knowledge. They also ask some clinical questions during the interview. Otherwise, the interview had the normal interview questions such as why do you want to be a CRNA, why did you pick MUSC, what does a CRNA do, what have you done to really be sure that you want to be a CRNA (ie shadow a CRNA), etc. They also throw an ethical question in there for fun.

Just reply to this thread if you want to know any more specifics.

Thank you so much for replying to my thread. And yes I would like more specifics!! 1) How many people were present at the interview and was it a laid-back type. 2) What did they did seem to focus on more than anything (ie, experience/certifications, etc). 3) And anything that you would like to add or heard would be wonderful!! Thanks again.

They asked heavy clinical questions, drugs, receptors, vents. family questions-support etc, ethical questions. Written test had gases, swans, etc. They interviewed about 55 people for 28 to 30 spots. There were 3 people in the interview- PD, Assist PD, and one other faculty member. They also had current students there in another room to answer any questions prior to your interview. They interviewed applicants one day a week over several weeks. There was not a tour. Got there visited with about 8 students, took the test, I was second in line, interviewed, spoke briefly to the students again and then left.

I will give a quick run down of the interview process.

show up, go to lounge and meet current students. this is very laid back, the students were studying and conversing with the all the candidates. i am not sure about the number RN's that the program interviews.

pretest given in separate room

I was interviewed by 2 people in a small office (the program director and I think the assistant program director). it was semi-laid back, but definitely not a 'just get to know you' type interview. and like i said before, clinical questions, especially related to your specialty.

i seem to remember that they liked CCRN and if you had any graduate nursing courses. the were also interested in support systems and stress management (both of which are very helpful during school!).

if you get an interview, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, with someone else. i have a list of common interview questions that i encountered. i will post them later

I have an interview at MUSC in Jan. I think I can get my way through a written test, but what sort of clinical questions do they ask? I am somewhat of a shy type and tend to have a bad habit of knowing the answer, but not having a great amount of confidence when answering. What is a typical "clinical-type" question? I will keep everyone posted on my interview. I am a little nervous because I have never been to the south before, but I hear it's lovely and the people are always showing their hospitality. Wish me luck.

When did you receive your interview invite?

I applied also to MUSC when did you receive your interview invite?

When did you receive your interview invite after the deadline?

MUSC would be my top choice but it seems quite difficult to get into without a LOT of experience (5+) or a killer GPA. I know of quite a few people that are incredibly intelligent that have not gotten in. Any insights on what MUSC is really looking for?
