Any advice for an OCC student??

Hi. I'm a newbie here.
I'm finishing my pre reqs for the nursing program at OCC and would very much like to get my foot in a hospital environment before I enter the program...which will be at least two years before I get in.
I've looked at nurse aide jobs and most hospitals require training for this. I don't know where I would receive that training from. If anyone has any information for me I would greatly appreciate it.
Or if anyone will be finishing the pre reqs and think they will be in the program 2008...I'm always up for making new friends!:monkeydance:

I'm in the same position that you are in at OCC. I will have completed all of my pre reqs by winter 2007. The local Red Cross offers nurse assistant classes for $800 and are offered both during the day and evening. To my understanding, you would have to attend five days a week for three weeks.

HFCC and Schoolcraft college also offers this course, however they are more expensive and it's only day classes. I've also heard of local nursing homes that will train you if you are an employee. I hope this helps and good luck:wink2:

Hi there!

Not sure where you live but I took my CNA classes through Lapeer County Skill Center?! It was a great program and I think I went every Monday through the summer months. I think they offer it year round though...I know it didn't cost $800...it was pretty cheap if I remember correctly.

I'm in Oxford...where do you live? Lapeer county had a good program. The instructor was wonderful! You could also check into wherever it is that you will be applying because sometimes you can get training through them or they will at least reimburse you! Good Luck!

I live in Lake Villa. I was thinking about applying at Genesys and seeing if they would train or help pay for training...the thing is I have 3 kids and go to class 3 days a week. So I don't know if I can make any commitments right now, even though the position is part time. It's tough juggling everything. Is there a website for the lapeer county program?

Were neighbors! I'm doing my 2nd year of med/surg right now at Genesys. As far as I know there is not a website for the Lapeer program. It was through the Lapeer ISD though...maybe information could help you or the Lapeer Chamber of Commerce? It was through the Career Center there.......

I'll keep looking for the number here. I think I got rid of it though.....Oh...I understand the kid thing. I have two myself and going to school full time! It's hard, but I just go day by day!

What a small world! :lol2: So are you in the park or live nearby? Thanks for helping out...I'm going to try and search for this Lapeer class. I told some girls at school about it and they want to know when I get the info, so if you happen to find that number that would be awesome!

Has anyone heard of Bakers CENA class? I was thinking about going that route...but someone mentioned that they aren't accredited. ???

I've learned something very interesting. According to the State of Michigan website, if you are currently in nursing school (

RN

or LPN) and have completed the nursing fundamental class, you can waive training. You will just have to take the CNA exam. Nursing fundamentals is usually given the first semester of nursing school.
