A nurse assesses a patient with a positive PPD. Which of the following is true concerning this situation?
a. the patient needs to be on contact isolation
b. the patient has antibiotics to the tuberculosis bacilli
c. the patient has an active TB infection
d. this patient will need to be on antibiotics for 3 to 6 years.
My answer was wrong. I won''t say which one she said it is, I was just curious as to how someone else might answer this, and possibly what the rational would be.
Thank you.

Interesting question.
A) If one has TB, you'd be in N95 isolation and not just contact isolation.
B)PPD doesn't mean hes taking meds for TB.
C)PPD doesn't necessarily mean they have TB, only a +sputum culture will tell you that.
D)TB antibiotics last for up to 24 months I recall correctly, not 3-6 years.
I don't really like any of the answers, but I'll guess A. How did I do?
The answer is supposed to be B. But to me none of them seemed right. A positive PPD may mean you received the vaccine. Which would pretty much negate all of the answers.

to me they are all wrong.
option a is wrong because tb is airborne precaution not contact.
option c is wrong because positive ppd does not mean that active disease is present but indicates previous exposure to tb or the presence of inactive disease (dormant). also those people who received the bcg vaccine from other countries will result to positive ppd but it does not mean they are infected.
option d is wrong because patients with active tb are treated (tb meds) for 6-9 months or so not 3-6 years.
so b is the only option left but i don't agree with it. if b is the correct answer, then that must mean option c is also correct because the patient has active tb infection that is being treated with the antibiotics.

Before I even looked at everyone else's posting I would of chosen B as the correct answer as well because it seemed to be the most logical answer to a question that really did not have a correct answer.
Did you type the question right with the right options?

This.
Maybe "antibodies" instead of "antibiotics"?

It has to be antibodies if B was the right answer.

yep that's a typo..antibodies
Problem solved. It was kind of funny because when she gave the answer I looked around and other people appeared confused. I'm laughing at myself for not catching that sooner. I just thought that maybe I was missing something important, but it made me go back and review the section on TB so all is not lost.
Thanks everyone it was a typo on the worksheet.

The answers are poorly written and should be thrown out! I agree with Agldragon RN on how the anwers should have read! Very innaccurate info!!!

I wouldn't say anything was poorly written. It was just a typo. B would make sense if it said Antibodies. Had it been my test I would have went up and verified with the teacher that is what was meant or went with that one assuming that is what was meant because the other ones are inaccurate with or without a typo.
