ANP to CRNA, advice needed

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

I am currently a NP, age 40, I have 7 years of NP experience and 17 RN years experience, my NP experience has been in an outpatient setting and about 1 year on an inpatient surgical/trauma floor. I would like to pursue becoming a CRNA. My only ICU experience is 2 years in a bone marrow ICU (pediatric), no vented pts. I have family and financial support to take two years off to pursue my goal. My questions are these; Do I need ICU for 1 year? If so which ICU (surg/med/CT) does it matter? Also, how do I explain to a prospective employer why I am seeking an RN position in an ICU when I am an NP (I'm not sure I can go into an interview saying "I plan on being here 1 year just for experience." I don't feel right about being dishonest. I would be taking the job in fact for just one year. Should I just go to my boss and collaborative physicians and tell them my goal and ask for their guidance? I just accepted a new position 2 months ago (same hospital) and that has really been the driving force making me realize my goal to be a CRNA. I meet the requirements for GPA, graduated Magna Cum Laude, Sigma Theta Tau. I have published material as well. Any advise on this career change would be greatly appreciated.
