Resources for new RNs in college health

Specialties Ambulatory

It seems that this is the most appropriate section of the forum to post to. I'm a new, second-career RN (I was previously an editor) and just started working at a very busy college health service of a humongous private university in the Philly region. I've been out of school since December and just started work now because I've been a stay-at-home mom to my infant daughter (I was 9 months pregnant when I took the nclex!).

I learned quickly in school that the hospital wasn't for me and that I prefer community, outpatient nursing. This facility also hires lots of new nurses part-time and I still want to be home with my girl lots. So, this position is really ideal. I'm just feeling a bit rusty clinically. There also isn't a traditional 3 month orientation with a preceptor like in a hospital--you learn as you go from whoever is available.

I'm fine asking questions and know there is a learning curve. But I wanted to create a thread for new RNs working in urgent/ambulatory care and would especially love to hear from those working in a college health setting. What and how are you learning? What outside resources (books, websites, etc.) are you utilizing to educate yourself? I'd love to hear from experienced RNs in this setting about how best to acclimate oneself. Personally, I'd love to get a little guidebook to refer to but when I search amazon, I just come across urgent care textbooks, not a quick resource. Can anyone recommend a good one for use in this setting? I'm looking forward to hearing your responses. Thank you!
