For those of you who have read my earlier posts, I've been in the process of applying for the Army Nurse Candidate Program. Just an update (also a question). I visited Ft. Sam Houston on Monday for a PE. Everything went well; blood results still pending, but no worries there. What concerns me is that I will still need a waiver due to past surgeries to repair spontaneous pneumothoraces (LT and RT lungs); but at the same time, I'm thinking that it won't be a problem because all of my medical records had to be reviewed before I even got my trip planned to Ft. Sam Houston. Just wondering if any of you have advice (or have had experience in getting medical waivers for the Military.

I have HEARD, and that means I don't really know for sure, that medical waivers are pretty hard to come by these days. And if you get one, they may take those that don't have them over those that do. Again, no one can predict who the board will select so it's definitely Worth your time to get the waiver, but if you don't get in this year, that may be why. It's all about cutting costs nowadays, especially that the military is drawing down again. Soldiers with medical issues are expensive. I came close to needing a medical waiver when I put reflux on my 2708. I had never actually been diagnosed with reflux and had to have a doc sign off on the fact that I haven't and that I just have infrequent heartburn controlled by diet and OTC meds. It was all documented on the waiver form, but is actually a clarification more than a waiver. However, if I don't get in this year it's a sure bet that was a contributing factor. Good luck and keep us posted!

I am also applying for the ANCP. Did your recruiter say if your waiver had to be in by the Oct 12th deadline? I have not had the physical yet, they are waiting on my medical records, but I know I will require a waiver.
