Airforce Labor and Delivery Nurse

Specialties Ob/Gyn

Published

Hi everyone! I'd like to know if there are any Labor and Delivery RN's/midwives active in the Air Force?? I would like to connect with someone to get direct information on what it's like to serve in the Air Force in either/both of these specialties. I'm a wife, mother, RN/BSN (9 months Tele, 6 months L&D). Thank you in advance :-)

Have you spoken with a nurse recruiter from the AF? They should be able to set you up with someone reputable to talk to. Not that I'm saying you can't get good info on the internet, but at least if you get connected to an AF midwife or L&D nurse via a nurse recruiter, you're certain of who you're talking to and that the info is good/current.

U.S. Air Force - Nurse

I served for 4 years in the Army, and I can give you some general advice:

1. Keep in mind that if you join the AF as an RN, you may not always work L&D. OB nurses (according to the AF's site) work with both OB and neonatal patients, so you could end up in either location, or you may end up in a totally different area of the nursing field. The needs of the AF come first, and if you're needed in med/surg, that's where you'll go.

2. Are you willing to give up your children/family life for a career as an airman? Military nursing isn't simply a career choice; it's a lifestyle. It can be especially difficult when people who have families/kids join as you are no longer in control of your own schedule/time/etc.
