Air Force Nursing

I know this question has probably been answered a few times on here, but it's probably outdated. What I really wanna know is it still near impossible to get into the Air Force as a new grad. I start a BSN program in September. I'm prior active duty enlisted, however, I still feel as though it is still my calling to serve this great nation. I'm not interested in loan repayment and all that jazz. I just want the opportunity to wear Air Force Blue again.What do you folks think? If anyone on here is a recruiter I'd love to have your input. If tou aren't id still appreciate any responses. Just tell me how it is guys.

Just wanted to bump this as I'd also like to hear new responses. I just graduated from an ADN program and am pursuing an RN-BSN specifically to join the AF. GPA is 3.75 and have a BS in another field. Planning to work med-surg while I am in school for additional experience. After reading threads about folks with tons emergency or critical care experience with good GPA's getting turned down.. well, it is a bit alarming. I am not seeking education repayment or anything either- just want to serve.

To the OP, from what I have read with others, I think you're being prior enlisted can only help you and I wish you the best of luck with your application!

VERY COOL :-) I would also like to join the Air Force ... as a Reserve, Flight Nurse. Big dream, eh? :-) I am working on my RN-BSN now. I say ... don't listen to the naysayers!!! Follow your dreams - shoot for the moon, if you miss, you'll still land amongst the stars :-)

first of all let me applaud you for your desire to serve this country in the military service as a bsn :yeah: in addition, i have taken the liberty and posted a link below that might answer you questions regarding this topic, make sure you read the last part of the page i noticed that it's directed to individuals with a bsn.....needless to say, you make us nurses rejoice with pride as you embark in your future as a air force nurse....wishing you the very best always in all of your future endeavors...aloha~

What GitanoRN said!!! Yay for you! I once dreamed of going into the Navy to be a nure midwife, but my own pregnancy in my junior year derailed that plan! Also touch base ith a local recruiter, they may be able to help as well. Good Luck!

The Airforce had a recruiting freeze a year ago. I am not certain of their recruiting policy as of to date. But, I would call a recruiter in your area to check into the new policies. If you'd like you could always start working at one of the military hospitals, if you are near a military instillation.

Other than that, the military is actually starting to chapter out a lot of individuals to save money. The wars are nearing an end, and the need for new soldiers is becoming not as urgent. The last time I heard from a senior enlisted individual, the military was looking to end service contracts for up to 200,000 soldiers/sailors/airmen by the end of 2012..

But, nurses will always be needed at the military hospitals. If your passion is to be surrounded by service members once again, look onto USAJOBS.gov for open vacancies. There are always openings for nurses( the process of hiring is a long one), but former service members have preferable status!

Just wanted to say I wish you good luck... though I'm not prior service I was in AFROTC 10 years ago and due to a medical issue I didn't stay with it, sadly. However I have decided to switch careers and go to Nursing school because AF Blue... it calls to me. I just applied to my first ASN school this month and a few years from now with my BSN in hand I hope to take The Oath.

Thanks for the positive input. I'm gonna go talk to a recruiter in the near future and see how things turn out. My program lasts 2 & 1/4 years so I have plenty of time. Hopefully the timing works out to where I can sneak in.

Alot better shot going reserves than active duty these days.

Do you have a job? If you start applying now, you will have 1+years of experience by the time they get you in. Network where you work for any guard or reserve nurses to give you a personal connection. Guard and reserve depend on your civilian experience, the better you have the better your chance. If you have the attitude that you will use your experience to serve versus using the Air Force to get experience you will do much better in my opinion. I hope you make it, I love working with prior enlisted officers. You are so valuable to know both sides of the fence. Good luck.
