AHPRA application

World Registration

Published

Hi, I am an English nurse with 4 years experience in trauma orthopaedics and 18 months in ICU. I am just organising all the documents I need to send in with my AHPRA application, wondered if anybody else was going through the process, just finding it slightly stressful lol. I am going travelling in November 3 months around South East Asia then 3 months around Australia before starting to work, I am going on a 12 months holiday working visa. I am going to start with agency work then hopefully find a full time job to gain sponsorship. Would be grateful for any advice.

Thanks

KT

Hello,

Apologies if this reply is now a little outdated in response to your post.

I am also in the same position as yourself. Although I have 2 years post registration experience. Have you successfully obtained your registration and visa? I have been quoted £20-£120 for EACH document to be certified accordingly (I have approx 15 documents!), did you find this a very costly process? Who did you find to certify your documents, was it a solicitor? It would be great to discuss our experiences together. Best of Luck x

Hi Lucia,

Thanks for your reply. Are u from the UK?? Check what documents u have as I had a lot more than 15 and they are still messaging me now for more information as they now require lots of details from the university other than academic transcripts. What documents do you have so far?

a

Also I went to the magistrates courts for my documents certifying. It cost me £25 for as many documents signing as you need.

It is a very stressful process but worth it in the end.

Are you wanting to travel and work in Australia?

Katy

Hello Katy,

Goodness, when did you first apply? Have you been granted your registration now? Congratulations if you have.

What documents have you used to support your application? I have not yet sent mine off as I am researching into who is willing/less cost involved to certify them. The documents I have include:

Passport

Driving Licence counterpart

Driving Licence card

Bank Statement

Bank Card

University certificate of qualification

University transcript of modules completed

College qualification transcript

Additional qualification for English communication transcript

2 x GCSE English certificates

A solicitor advised I contacted the university and college wherein I obtained my qualifications for a letter to be documented from them to advise the certificates received are accredited to me. I also have those too which I have added to the collection of documents.

What documents did you have for certification?

Magistrates court, does that fall into the category of a member of the Justice of Peace? I did not think to contact them, however, now you have mentioned it, I will give them a call. Were the AHPRA happy to receive your documents certified by the Magistrates Court?

I apologise for all of the questions, but yes like you said it is very stressful. Especially when the past 5 years worth of Employers statements of service are also required. There is alot of follow up action required.

Yes, my boyfriend and I are planning to live and work in Australia. We have both applied for a First Year Working Holiday visa. His has been accepted, mine is still currently in progress. I am a little apprehensive as to why a delay has occurred. I was not sure if applying for the AHPRA Nursing Registration had an effect?

When are you due to leave the UK?

Hi,

Documents I sent also included a CV which I set out according to AHPRA requirements. I also sent proof of all my competencies outlined on the CV which included a competency book for band 5 critical care nurses.

I had previously heard that I needed to send a letter from my high school and college stating I was educated in the English language. As daft as it sounds I managed to get this done.

Proof of ongoing education and development is another requirement so I sent all certificates and got an up to date copy of training printed as it is now all just saved online, I got a charge nurse to sign this for me.

Apparently they have recently changed information they need and require a full outline of your nursing course including evidence of how many hours clinical practice you received. I phoned university who are currently sorting this for me. They also require proof that the course taken is an accredited course, the NMC provide this information and send it off. I would apply for your certificate of good standing now from the NMC as they are very slow, it took them 6 weeks to even send mine in the post and that was after I phoned up to complain as I had a deadline from AHPRA.

I sent my application form off around February/March can't remember the exact date but get it sent ASAP.

My case is going to be assessed on the 21st this month when they receive my updated information.

The whole situation is quite stressful as some of the information they require is quite hard to get hold of.

Just can't wait until it's all sorted.

I am leaving the UK in November. Going to travel 3 months round South East Asia first. When do you leave??

Hello,

Yes, the CV also, this does not have to be certified by the authorised individual though does it?

That is a great idea, although the only competency book I have was a skills book I had to complete as a student, is that what yours consisted of?

With regards to the English competency, does your GCSE certification not account for this?

Your ongoing professional development, is that just a range of courses or study days that you have been certified as attending and achieving?

Yes, I understand they do wish to receive information regarding the course content, I may issue them with my practice hour time sheets to identify this, is this how you went about that?

I have contacted the NMC for the good standing reference however have not heard from them, I may chase this up soon to ensure this has been completed.

Have you applied for your visa, did you obtain this prior to your registration?

I do hope it is all granted for you following the review date this month, it appears you have had a difficult time with this.

If all is successful promptly, we intend to go in November too :)

Are you travelling with anyone else or are you going on your own? Have you applied for Nursing positions s yet or are you awaiting for your registration first?

xx

Hi,

The CV does not have to be authorised you just need to sign it and date it with the statement they give u on the AHPRA site. The magistrates are very good they stand as justice of the peace, they just signed all my documents just in case lol.

As regard to competences, if you work for the NHS they should have a band 5 competency document that you can get signed. Wherever I have worked previously I have been given competencies but u can guarantee they never get signed unless you nag people. Lucky I'm on ICU now we are well supported and my team leader went through all my competencies so I could send them off with my application. Have a word with your manager as I also found them useful as a guide to write my competencies on my CV. If it would help I could email you my CV so you can see what I included. It took me ages to write lol.

Regarding English competency I had heard from a friend that I needed to get this letter and then later seen it wrote on blogs. I emailed AHPRA who stated it would be useful if I could get a letter stating that I was educated in the English language. It seems rather bizarre considering we live in England. I had real trouble getting the letter from my school as the school I went to is now an academy and education Leeds had recently moved, nobody in the council seemed to know their contact number. I spent 3 hours one morning on phone to council trying to find education Leeds, in the end I put a complaint in then got this sorted within half an hour lol.

For my ongoing professional development I included academic transcripts from any university course I have done, then info about study days from work.

Extra information from university included a complete outline of all the modules undertaken and proof of how many hours clinical practice. I was worried about if university would be able to provide this but when I phoned they were very helpful and have posted this information over to AHPRA for me.

I have not yet applied for my VISA but you can just buy working holiday visas straight from STA travel if you under 31 so I'm not worried about this. I'm going to apply online though through Australia as this is cheaper.

I am going travelling with one of my friends (not a nurse), so excited to go. I have applied and been accepted with a nursing agency based in Sydney, once I have finished travelling I am going to apply for more permanent employment.

Hello Katy,

Thankyou kindly for your reply. That is ok then, I just wanted to clarify that. I contacted the local Magistrates today, they requested £25 per document to be signed. It appears this is the norm where I live!

I will utilise all of the information you have guided me through and endeavour to support my application with this. I thought I was pretty much on top of it all, however, it seems more complex then first thought so thankyou for your advice.

Have the agency been willing to accept you despite not having your registration then? I am currently working in a Prison so very keen to continue this work in Australia. I have applied for a number of positions but have only had one response stating I do not meet the criteria due to not having the valid registration. (Which is understandable). What agency have you signed up to?

I am sure your friend and yourself will have a great time! Like you said, once all is sorted and inplaced we can relax and enjoy! Do you have an email address. If ok with you, maybe we could discuss things further via email rather then on here?

xx

Hi,

If you email me on [email protected] . I will be happy to help where I can and can get you in touch with the agency I am now signed on with.

It is a long process but hopefully you might find it easier if I can guide you considering I have just been through all this too.

Email me when you like.
