Advice on programs

Published

I'm in a bit of a quandry. I want to become an RN, but I'm having trouble deciding on which road to take. I have a BS and MS in biology, so I have advanced science degrees. There are two programs in my area that I can go with to becoming an RN.

The first is an alternative entry program that will lead to RN liscensure with a MSN. But, it's a large university, will take about 3 years to complete, require me to take the GRE (again), and be very expensive.

The second is a two-year program through a community college. It will be a cheaper, easier, and shorter road to becoming an RN, but I'm afraid that my opportunities will be rather limited with just an associate's degree in nursing even though I have a graduate degree in a life science.

So, can any one give me some advice? Is the big, expensive program really going to be worth it or am I going to go broke and be burned out before I even get started in my career? Is the community college forever going to relegate me to the dregs of career opportunities because I didn't go to right school or I didn't get a piece of paper with BSN written on it?

Why not cosider an accelerated BSN program. I believe they average 12 months. You could always pick up the master's degree later at a slower pace. Best of luck!
