Advice for New Grad

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

Hi, guys! I just discovered this site and I've been lurking around. Now I'm ready to jump in! I'd like to start by introducing myself. My name is Lani and I'm graduating from my PN program June 11. I'm 22 years old and I have a little boy who will be turning 3 just days before graduation.

My question is this...sorry, it might get long...

When I first started last year, I was looking for something quick to get my foot in the door because as a single parent, I was tired of being broke and I finally got the chance to pursue nursing. I chose to start out with the PN program since it was only a year long. The only coreq my program required was Nutrition and I took that the first semester of nursing school. I knew I eventually wanted to pursue my RN degree and planned on going straight to the RN-accelerated program that starts every January which required 8 prereqs. Well, actually, you need two to get in the program and can take the remaining six within the program since the nursing school has an agreement with the local community college. It's kinda confusing, I know. I figured I could get some of them out of the way over the summer. Now, I'm not so sure. This year has been financially and emotionally trying and while I made great grades, I'm in desperate need of a break from school! I'd also like to take some time to work now that I have a better idea of what I'm getting into and save up money.

The RN program at the school is for a diploma. At first, I was thinking I would do the diploma program and then do the completer for the BSN. I still have to take all of the prereqs for that minus Nutrition. 64 hours total. Would you recommend going LPN-RN-BSN? Or would you just do LPN-BSN? I've tried comparing the costs, weighing the pros and cons, trying to figure out what would be best for my family, and just about everything else and I still can't figure it out. Am I being too ambitious? Should I stick with my original goals or go ahead and pursue the RN diploma and then take a break?

Thanks in advance! I know I asked a lot of questions...lol And congratulations to everyone graduating this summer!!!
