advice needed, going from clinic nursing to hospital nursing

Published

I got my RN license in May 2008, unfortunately there was a massive hiring freeze on this already limited health care island. I was fortunate to get a job at a clinic but I am wanting to explore hospital nursing. This has been my first job as an RN so my experience is limited. My concern to go from clinic nursing to hospital nursing is two-fold: 1. figuring out how to re-familiarize myself with hospital nursing (especially with assessment skills) and 2. trying to get myself to be hire-able due to my limited experience and have now worked as an RN for going on 2yrs. Living on this particular island, my options are very limited to 1 hospital (unless I'm willing to drive 1.5-2hr one way, but with a family that just doesn't work). I'm concerned that if I don't try to pursue this now, I will lose all that information I worked so hard at obtaining. Does anyone have any advice on making/preparing for this transition and/or what you do to keep things fresh in your mind as to "keep yourself in the game". Much appreciate any responses as this is weighing heavy on my mind. Thanks!!
