Advice on 2nd Career

U.S.A. North Carolina

Hello all! To tell you all a little bit about me, I'm a 27 year old single mom of a 5 year old little boy with cerebral palsy. I will be graduating from a Radiography program in NC on May 8th ( I also have a BS in Public relations), I should be happy but I'm really not. "THERE ARE NO JOBS". I contemplates so much before I started school between nursing and radiology, but in the end I chose this. I really would love to be a nurse because I do need the flexibility for my son. But i am so burned out from school I don't know what to do. I feel like kicking myself in the butt because I will have 2 degrees and have not started a career yet. Orginally there were tons of radiology jobs but, they are very few and far between for almost 4 years now (and that is nationwide). But, to shorten my "whining", I was thinking about going back for LPN and then doing RN online. Everyone in my family is getting so frustrated with me but I do need a job. They think I should stick with radiology and wait it out. But one of the main reasons for me getting into the program was for the flexibility(because my son is severly disable and gets sick alot and I needed to be able to be here for him). It really sucks that I will be graduating with a 3.7 GPA and take me forever to find a job. But thank you all for any help or advice you can give and allowing me to vent (because I can't go to my family with it).:crying2:

Specializes in Peds (previous psyc/SA briefly).

Hmmm.... I didn't realize that there was a job shortage in radiology. That would be discouraging! That being said, I honestly sometimes regret getting my RN as a second (+) degree (and as a single mom at that time!) and wish I had gone to radiology school!!! You will make more and not have as much bs to deal with. As far as flexibility - if you work in the hospital, you'll have the same flexibility as a nurse as far as scheduling goes, right?

I just glanced at UNC job boards and there are lots of radiology listings, but I don't know the different specialties.

What if you made a decision to try it for a year? You are so close!! And you've come so far - it had to have been so hard. It'd be a shame to make a decision now, when things may not be as clear as they will be once you graduate...

?? but those are just my thoughts. Only you know what is best for your heart. Either way - best! of luck!!!
