Advice on grabbing my first nursing job

Hi everyone!

I am new to this website and had a question about seeking employment as a new graduate. I worked very hard in my consolidation year (I had a year long placement in a surgical unit) to impress my preceptor and the other employees. They all told me that I should definitely apply for a job. I took the initiative to talk to the nurse manager on the unit and she told me that because she had just hired a bunch of people (it is a place with a high turnover rate) she said she will not be accepting anyone until the fall and she expects me to have my NCLEX done before I apply. So I am going to be writing my NCLEX in the next month but I wanted to ask this just to mentally prepare myself for my future. I really want this job and I am not going to put my eggs in one basket but once I pass my NCLEX should I call that nurse manager to let her know I am still interested in a future job position and inquire about when jobs will be posted to apply for? She gave me her card and she took my resume and wrote down who my two preceptors were on that unit.

Is there anything else I can do to increase the likelihood of getting that job?

Thanks!

Yes, once you've passed the NCLEX and have your license, give the manager a call to update her and to give a friendly reminder that you are still interested in working when/if openings become available in the fall.
