Advice For Joining Air Force

Published

I'm currently finishing up my AA at a community college. I'm ultimately interested in getting my Bachelors in Nursing and becoming an officer. I went to an air force reserve recruiter thinking it was best to be able to continue with my education. I just went to MEPS and scored a 91 on my ASVAB.

I've done some research and found the Nurse Enlisted Commisioning Program (NECP) and the Airman Scholarship and Commissioning Program (ASCP). Both look like they are offered to active duty airmen not reserves and on an application basis. I wouldn't mind joining active duty if I could go right into finishing my bachelors degree. Are there any programs when joing the reserves?

What is the best route to take with these goals in mind?

Hi,

I am not a nurse and wasn't in the Air Force, but I did serve 11 years AD in the Army. Went from enlisted to officer and have a fellow friend who is a midwife as an officer. There are plenty of opportunities. I'd first check out all the branches - some might have more options over others - and second, find yourself a nurse on AD and pick their brains. Recruiters are a great starting point but they have to make a monthly quota and you don't want to get into a commitment you regret. While AF doesn't deploy like the Army, they still deploy too so if Afghanistan doesn't sound like fun, do your homework first...or it might be exactly where you want to get that hands on experience.
