Advice on Cover Letter for Internship

Published

Here is my question. I am interested in applying for an internship in the rural town I live in. There is no formal internship program at this hospital, but I have spoke with the DON about doing an internship and he stated to send a resume and cover letter stating my expectations of the internship. I have no idea what to put in the cover letter since the internship was not advertised and I am the only person they have had interested in an internship. Any advice for a cover letter? Thanks!

"To encounter hospital based experiences and work with professional nurses and the interdisciplinary team to increase my knowledge base and education through an internship program."

That is what I put as my objective on my resume. I went to an internship fair at the hospital in my area and they did not want cover letters.

You might want to think about what you want to get from this internship because everyone that interviewed me asked that question! I told them I wanted to get a good feel for the interpersonal relationships and mutual respect between workers; get a really good idea of what nurses do in that department, and increase my hands on cath insertions and iv insertions. I wanted to learn and not just perform CNA skills. I also told them it would be a good way for me to make sure this nursing dept. would be a good fit for my personality and skills. ( I was interested in OR and L&D); and that I was definitely interested in working at their hospital after graduation. I was offered positions for all of the departments I interviewed for.

Good Luck- I think internships are a really good way to preview a job or speciality without making a long term commitment.

Specializes in Psychiatry.

Don't forget to also include how YOU can benefit THEM :D

And what your short and long term goals are. Your greatest strengths, etc. And any clinical

experiences you've had as well as positive comments from patients, instructors, etc.

"Sell yourself." :yeah:

Good Luck!

Best,
