accelerated PCT courses in NJ?

Nursing Students Technicians

Hi,

OK, here's my situation. I recently lost my job as a PCT in an Emergency Room. I held that job for 4 years and was before that, an LPN for 30 years. The PCT training I did receive (EKGs, phlebotomy, etc.,) was done within house, so I never was officially certified. So, I've applying for jobs without success and despite my long experience and good references, I get the feeling that without certification you won't be considered. Are there any approved accelerated PCT courses in NJ?

I'm very sorry for your situation, but why not work as an LPN?

Healthcare jobs in NJ are becoming scarce, I can say that from personal experience and that of my classmates; who are scrambling to get some sort of job in a hospital before graduation in the hopes of landing a new grad position.

Hi,

Thanks for writing. I was an LPN til 2009 when I was offered the ER PCT position as they were phasing out LPNs at the hospital where I worked. It was a godsend, for after 30 years as an LPN, I was done both mentally and physically. They gave me the same pay and I didn't have to give meds or do any heavy duty charting. Just be a second pair of eyes for the RN-vitals, blood work, EKGs, etc.,. You were on your feet to be sure, but I really liked it. Never a dull moment and I worked with some really great folks.

However, since I posted my thread, I'm starting a EKG/Phlebotomy course next week to get my certifications. After that I'll be casting my net a bit far (PA, MD and VA) looking for a job. Was planning to retire in those states in any case-so why not go now? I'm hopeful as I look upon my situation not as one of disaster but of opportunity.

Hope this post finds you well. Thanks for writing.
