Accelerated Nursing Programs

Published

Hey guys, I'm in desperate need of some major help. I'm currently finishing my junior year with a little under a 3.0, however I transferred in as a junior, and am also a bio major. I graduated with my associates with a 3.6, that being said when I transferred my GPA reset and my GPA now is limited to 2 semesters at the university i'm currently attending, where I'll be getting my bachelors in bio. I've been looking at salem state and curry college's accelerated nursing programs but the average GPA is a 3.5. I've gotten all A's and A-'s for the nursing pre-reqs. However, I have a total of 4 C's and 1 C- but in the harder science courses. I'm just really concerned about getting accepted given my GPA. I'm unsure if i should retake the class that I got a C- in and do a grade deletion, that would help my GPA. What do you guys think I should do? Also, are there any other accelerated nursing programs you guys know of?

Another side note, I'm thinking of getting my CNA or EMT next summer. Any suggestions?

I think you are in a better situation than you believe yourself to be. Although your current university reset your gpa, an absn program will almost assuredly take your entire undergraduate gpa, putting you somewhere in the 3.3-3.4 range. That's pretty good for a bio major! I graduated last year with a degree in bio and had a much lower undergraduate gpa than that but have been accepted to a few ABSN programs. There are well over 100 ABSN programs in the US, just search state by state with google to find them.

Getting your CNA or EMT would be awesome, both for experience and for resume building. However I think the best thing you can do for your application is show improvement in your class grades. Regardless of whether you have a sub 3 Gpa right now, if you work to get above a 3.5 for your senior year most programs will look highly on that, especially for a major as difficult as bio. So work hard and good luck!

PS: average program gpa's are as they say "average". Some applicants get in with a 3.9, but that means the pendulum will swing the other way and the program will accept a student with a 3.0 but excellent application peripherals (I.e. References, essay, etc.). So don't worry about being slightly below the average because you still have a good chance of being accepted.

Thank you, this was very helpful! My senior year consists of all bio classes and I added on AP 1 and 2

(1 each semester) as a free elective, therefore I hope it'll be possible to get my gpa now above a 3.0.
