Abandonment?

I work in LTC day shift Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I am being told by my employer that if I do not pick up Thursdays that I will be turned into the State Board of Nursing for abandonment. Would anyone consider this abandonment. I do not believe it can be consider abandonment. I am that only nurse that is being asked to pick up an extra day. The nurse that works Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday is not being asked to work. What are my options?

under no circumstances would that be considered abandonment.

Quit or stay, but that is certainly not abandonment

I am looking to quit not for this reason. I have other reasons for quitting. A new RN hire is making almost $5 more than I am and I have been with the company for 4 years.

How stupid do they think we are? Who falls for this type of garbage?

OP: Might I make a suggestion. Please go to your states BON website and look at their definition of abandonment. I can guarantee that it does NOT include not coming into work. DONs like to scare new nurses with that, but the only thing they can do is fire you. Don't let them intimidate you.

Tell them that if they try to do that, the next thing they will know is that someone greatly concerned just called your state's Department of Labor re. forced overtime not specified in working contract. Just make sure it is not really there. Plus, something tells me that your facility has some... and then SOME problems with staffing, hasn't it? State will love to know about them as well.

And, yeah, it would not be abandonment.

I'd have my money on the idea that they actually think it's true, themselves.

That's is completely absurd and they are trying to take advantage of you.

They are just hoping you will fall for it...guess again. You must accept an assignment first and then leave without telling anyone such as a supervisor. That is the defintion in most states.

Not even close to abandonment but do make sure you are aware of your states BON policies/definition of abandonment. If you are already thinking of leaving that facility here is the chance to speed up the process.

I want to apply at your facility. I will only work dayshift Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I will be chomping at the bit just waiting for them to approach me about Thursdays the same way they are trying to bamboozle you...... I soooo wish I could actually do this, it would great fun...

It's worth me re-upping my license....

It is absurd that they would threaten you with this but now I am afraid they will search through all your charting and find some minor mistake you made somewhere that they will then report to the Board, in retaliation for not working on Thursday. So if it were me I might consider working it but I would be trying to leave and find other employment elsewhere.
