Hello! First if I am in the wrong topic area, please let me know and I will delete and move to the correct topic. After super scary comments from people about this year's ANCC PMHNP test, I have decided to take the AANP's PMHNP test. There's no policy. I was told there was a lot of policy on the 24/25 test. AANP is strictly clinical. That being said, does anyone have any ideas for the best prep course for this test? I guess the best prep course may be for both and I can just leave out the Policy section. Audio/Video really work best for me b/c I am a visual person, but prior to this when I was planning to take the ANCC, I had to speak all of the notes into my phone b/c I really needed both elements for info to stick. Prep programs that are just questions in theory should work best b/c they are interactive learning, but my brain has a way of learning by organizing things so when I'm just given questions at first with no prep, my brain doesn't seem to know where to store the info so it just goes out the window. Any thoughts on this? I would like to take the test in the next 3ish weeks but I have been preparing, just not hearing good things about what I've learned so far, and I also tend to do best when I emerse myself in the information for a shorter amount of time and then take the test. I am also an FNP and this is how I prepared. I think I gave myself a month.
Thank you for any ideas!
Anna
Hi! So we know the ANCC test for PMHNPs has completely changed, but in what ways? So far I've heard things like there's more policy & ethics questions, the questions are written differently not unlike our RN test, designed to trip you up if you don't really read every single word but at the same time don't read ANYTHING INTO THE QUESTION that isn't explicitly stated, what is allowed in the testing area (no more 1 sheet of paper), etc. I recently spoke with Latrina Walden's program coordinator [MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME] and THEY don't even know all the ways its changed, they just know the changes are "DRASTIC." To the point that Latrina has taken down her prep for it. So I was thinking no big deal I'll take the AANP test; however, Latrina said since the AANP test is so new and the ANCC is the gold standard, most employers, even companies looking for consultant work, they are looking for that "bc" and if its only "c" I would be doing myself a major disservice & she has heard so far that while those who have taken and passed the AANP's PMHNP board, they are having a much more difficult time finding a job than their counterparts. Given this, I'm back to the ANCC. I threw the idea out of putting together a team of anywhere between 5 and 8 APNs who are really good at finding out information to learn as much as we can about these changes. The first thing I'm going to do is call the ANCC because if the test is this different, we have a right to know how to prepare. I don't expect them to tell me if they wouldn't tell Latrina, but it's worth a try. The best way for us to know all the ways its changed is through previous test takers this year who have taken it and passed! That being said, I'm keeping notes and trying to collect as much information as I can and if anyone has taken or takes this totally new ANCC, I would kindly ask that you file as much information as you can (like you don't already have enough information, sorry guys,) concerning the multitude of differences you see so we can all know how to prepare, which again, I think should be a basic right but evidently it's not. This is strictly for the 2025 test taker and I think it started in February. I don't know why they did this other than the AANP started offering a version and they want to differentiate themselves from the AANP's test. But anyone who wants to join this stealth team (ridiculous that it has to be "stealth" in the first place) or has taken the test, I would be so appreciative if you guys could give us any insight whatsoever into how it's changed bc the information I have so far doesn't even scratch the surface! Thank you so much and best of luck to you all regardless of what you decide to do in this situation!
One more thing. All of the other APN exams reveal the basic information I am looking for about the test has changed so much in 2025 and I don't understand why it is so secretive. This puts PMHNP test takers in 2025 at a major disadvantage when compared to their counterparts.
