I don't think the President has the power to over rule a constitutional amendment.  He should go through the proper channels for change if this is what he wants.

I also think he's exaggerating the "birth tourism" idea and has no data to back up what he's saying.

Along with immigrants themselves birthright citizens wind up contributing to the economy, same as the rest of us.  It's just a fear mongering idea of the Heritage Foundation and Trump.

They still can contribute to the economy.  Why should they get automatic citizenship?  What other countries do that?

I guess Democrats have "evolved" on this issue:

"Based on historical records and fact-checking, the claim that two-thirds of all births in Los Angeles County were to illegal immigrants is false, and the statistic often quoted to support this (frequently linked to a 1993 comment by former Senator Harry Reid) is heavily misleading or based on inaccurate, exaggerated data from that era. "

From Politifact.  Thanks for highlighting the fear mongering falsehoods surrounding this issue.

From Politifact.  Not sure why you quoted me but thanks for highlighting the fear mongering falsehoods surrounding this issue.

I edited my post after you saw it.  The actual numbers aside, why should those born here to illegal immigrants get automatic citizenship?

I offered up no opinion on the matter, only saying they contribute to the economy.

That being said, I can offer my opinion.  Children of illegal immigrants should not get automatic citizenship.  They should be deported as a family.  Children of people here legally but not citizens, (such as Marco Rubio) perhaps should.  Although the thought of deporting Rubio would be desirable.

On the other hand the children didn't ask to be born, or brought to this country and often grow up here and consider themselves Americans.  It would be cruel to take away their citizenship or DACA if they've been here for many years.  Maybe there should be a plan moving forward.

But it should not be done by authoritarian decree, it's in the constitution so it should be changed legally if there's a will to do so by the congress and American people.

This was studied last year.

Public opinion on the issue is complicated. Americans are heavily in favor of granting citizenship to children born to parents who were also born in the U.S. — or to those who immigrated to the U.S. legally. But they are split on — or much less in support of — automatic citizenship for children born to parents who immigrated illegally.

Oh, OK.  I mostly agree with all that.

Article based on U.S Census data

Pew Research Center March 1, 2026:

About 9% of U.S. births in 2023 were to unauthorized or temporary legal immigrant mothers...

Quote

...Between 2006 and 2019, the annual number of births to unauthorized immigrant mothers dropped by more than 40%, to 215,000.

...Not all of these children are still in the U.S. Many have left the country, and some may have died. In addition, some of those who stayed may have seen a parent's legal status change. But we can assess the impact of potential changes in birthright citizenship by looking at how many people born in the U.S. have unauthorized immigrant parents in current data.

In 2023, an estimated 4.6 million children had been born in the U.S. and were living with at least one unauthorized immigrant parent. Another 1.4 million adults born in the U.S. lived with at least one unauthorized immigrant parent, bringing the total to more than 6 million. (The number of adults born in the U.S. who have unauthorized immigrant parents is likely much higher, but our data only captures adults still living with their parents.)

Most of these people – 3 million children and 1 million adults – do not have a father with legal residence status. They are U.S. citizens by birth, but if Trump's executive order had been in place, they would have added to the estimated 14 million unauthorized immigrants in 2023.

1 in 10 eligible voters in the U.S. are naturalized citizens

Quote

...Most naturalized citizen eligible voters have lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years. About three-quarters of immigrant eligible voters (73%) have lived in the U.S. for more than two decades. Another 20% have lived in the country for 11 to 20 years, while relatively few (8%) have been in the U.S. for a decade or less.

This pattern reflects the United States' lengthy citizenship process. Generally, immigrants are required to be lawful permanent U.S. residents for at least five years before they are eligible to apply for citizenship. However, the median number of years before immigrants are eligible for naturalization varies by their country of birth....

The top five Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs) where people who naturalized resided were (in descending order): New York-Newark-Jersey City (14.4%), Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach (6.9%), Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim (6.5%), Washington-Arlington-Alexandria (3.9%), and Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land (3.2%).

More than 37% of citizens naturalized in FY 2024 were 30 to 44 years old. The median age of those naturalizing in FY 2024 was 42 years. About 17% were younger than 30 years old, and 23 new citizens were centenarians (age 100 and older)!

Women made up over 55% of those naturalized in FY 2024, and they were the majority in every age group. ...

President Donald Trump agreed to a ceasefire on Tuesday and to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for two weeks.

The move came after talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who urged Trump to delay any further U.S. military action while both sides continued to negotiate.

"This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump will be noted in history as the first U.S President to threaten genocide by these statements.

Real negotiators don't need to make threats nor those desiring to be awarded a Noble Peace prize. Serious longstanding damage to our country's reputation unless Congress takes action to curb his enthusiasm re annihilation of Iran.

According to many, Trump has already done serious longstanding damage to our reputation.  So, not sure why you're so concerned about that.

We've been dealing with Iran for 50 years.  Do you think the status quo should have been the long-term plan?
