transplant from Indiana to Tacoma...help :)

I am planning on moving to the Tacoma area the second a I graduate from nursing school here in Indiana...I was wondering if anyone that has transplanted to Washington could tell me how long it took get your license...and a job! for that matter. I assume I have to take my boards here in Indiana in May 2010, but I just don't know what to do from there. Any advice/help would be great!!!

I have 2 boys that will be 15 and 13 when we get there, how are the schools around Browns Point/UP? The neighborhoods? We live in a small town now, and I am the "neighborhood mom", I'm scared that they will miss all the kids around :(

The Washington State License takes about 4 to 6 weeks. You should not have problems finding a job but I am a travel Nurse so I am not sure.

I recently moved here from Minnesota. It took me 10 weeks to get my RN license in WA. I had the job before the license, and got the job a week after I sent in my application.

I have no idea about the neighborhoods as I havn't lived here for long enough, just a couple months now.

I didn't transplant so I can't tell you how long it will take to get your license, but you can often find great neighborhoods with lots of kids. Puyallup and Spanaway and Graham especially have lots of newer housing suburbs which often have lots of younger families and playgrounds. Also if you search for a home with ziprealty it will show a map, closest parks and average age and family size of the neighborhood - all based of some census so take with a grain of salt, but if you live close to a park you should probably have lots of kids nearby in the summer.

Jobs here are tough due to recent conditions. I would seriously advise having the job before moving as it might take a long time. There are hiring freezes throughout the region, but at least 3 hospitals I know of are in the midst of an expansion (Good Sam - Puyallup), (Highline - Highline) and (Valley - Renton). So by 2010 they should be needing more staff for the expansion.

We moved from Indiana to Redmond in 2007. It took about 4 weeks to get my Washington license. I applied online at several hospitals and did my interviews over the phone. I wanted to cash in on money to assist with moving expenses. The job market isn't as good as it was, and I have experience, but I don't think you should have problems. I was amazed at the number of jobs available here. I was living in Bloomington, so there was only 1 hospital ( at the time) to choose from unless you wanted to commute to Indy. I don't know the Tacoma area at all, but I am very happy with Redmond. My kids (7 &10) had a hard time, but settled in by the 2nd school year. My 14 year old has had a harder time. Good Luck!
