Tips on passing CNA Test! please...

U.S.A. Washington

Published

Hello! I am going to take the test for Nursing Assistant certification and I have no clue how the test would be like. I am a Registered Nurse from my country ---- this is how I qualify to sit for the test without going through the CNA program here. The DSHS is going to send me the packet to study, but I learned from here that there's a skills exam as well? I wanted to know what type of skills they are going to test and the test plan for CNA if there's any?

Thank you in advance for answering my questions.

Sincerely,

Martheena

I'm not sure where you can get a book. Have you tried searching amazon? I'm sure they have some books there.

I'm confused how you can sit for the written, when you're not enrolled in a CNA course. Don't you have to be registered first? :)

Hi! Thanks for taking time to post that info. The other day, I actually happened to browse on Pearson Vue website and checked on WA Nurses Aide and had the handbook printed. I tried to answer it and got 55/60. Is it bad?? passing or fail?? Do you know the passing score? I also am studying the skills listed on the handbook.

Also, I tried searching at Amazon. I found several materials like Lippincott, etc. But I'm a lil bit skeptical about the relevance of the material to the CNA test whether or not the review topics are test-sensitive specific to WA CNA Test.

I qualify to sit for the exam because of my BS Nursing degree I earned from overseas. I had my school transcript of records evaluated by DSHS and basically just have to wait for them to send me the packet as advised. I just got here in the US a few months ago, so basically I really have no clue about the scope of the CNA Exam, specially on the laws, ethics that applies here in Washington or the US.

I appreciate very much your insight on these.

I'm nearly positive that's passing. I don't know exactly how many you can miss though. I can't find that information either.

HI Matheena, relax it's not as hard as u think maybe, stay focus mostly bedside nursing you being a registered nurse from a different country you're pretty much well diverse on bedside nursing - main focus on handwashing as others advice you - in a skill exam handwashing is the first thing to do and before starting the procedue inform patient what are you doing and maintain communication through out the process- in written is mostly bedside and safety nursing measure -relax and pray you'll be fine!! Good luck!!

HI, Hope this will help ! Go to : (www.pearsonvue.com) There are 38 Skill listing, for the skills evaluation you will be asked to perform five of the skills listed. Critical Element Steps are marked in bold type. Handwashing will be counted as 1 skill , If you go to the web site there you can print out a Nurse Aid Candidate Handbook, it has what you need to know on skills Evaluation & Written Exam. Good Luck ,By the way the test is not hard @ all !!

I found the CNA testing information just by googling "nurse aide registry for ___________" (name of state). If you are in TX, AL, GA, you can go to www.nacesplus.org and get information there. They have online sample testing, application forms, sample questions, downloadable booklet, etc. There are also phone numbers to call and you can have a booklet sent to you that outlines that can be tested.

When you actually go to test, I believe you have to bring a friend with you who will act as your patient when you do your skills testing.

Good luck!

Thank you very much for the advise and offering a hand to help me get through all this. I do really really appreciate!

I called the BON last July (month after I arrived here in the US) to inquire about the NCLEX process and I have started gathering my papers together to request my School Transcript of Records from my school in the Philippines for CES (credential evaluation) which is basically done by the CGFNS (normally takes 4-5 months). The CES fee is around $300, plus there's the BON application fee and also the cost for review. It's just alot of financial requirements that I won't be able to meet unless i work. So this is how i come up with the CNA decision. I see it as a win-win solution, if i got the CNA job I'd be able to afford the fees for the NCLEX application process and at the same time earning valuable experience from the job per se (hospital exposure, US setting). I also have other degree BS Commerce Major in Management Accounting, perhaps there will be companies out there who will hire me for a non-Nursing job? (not sure of this) but as much as possible I want to be get a job that is in line with Nursing. I don't want to detour :sniff:. I love nursing!:redbeathe So this is my story.

I have downloaded the handbook from WA DSHS already, and I think i am confident with my skills. My only concern is the theory part as I am totally stranger as to the policies, insurances, state laws etc that governs CNAs.

Again, thank you for the advices. Means alot to me!

Hi there! :) I understand why you ask. BSN training is no joke. I explained my circumstance on my reply to the above post, hoped I am making a wise decision (?). I will surely pursue my NCLEX-RN test in no time, my goal is to take it this coming April. I hope am setting a realistic goal considering I'd be working at the same time. I am currently self-reviewing using Saunders book. And hope to enroll proper classroom review ( I felt like I do really need it) once I got my ATT. I still have to findout if there's available in my area (WA).

Thank you ...

Your welcome Matheena - I totally understand your side specially on the financial side of things! there's also another company that does the credentialling IERF they are half the cost of CGFNS and less than 4-5 months unless WA strictly utilized to use CGFNS w/c some states do that - pardon me on asking are you married or have families here? they can stand as assistance/support to you financially for the time being in reaching your goals in obtaining your RN licensed here - and likewise I sunderstand you probably wants to be independent on it as well, understandably of your feeling of freaking out of not knowing things here - yet CNA as a nursing assistant is pretty much similar where ever you go - just think about bedside nursing and basic scope of nursing and you'll be fine - not much theories to learn nor insurances - it's the NCLEX - RN that you have to know those thoeries here are quite in a higher standard w/c rightfully so - anyhow at least you've taken the steps towards you NLCEX - RN - having a major in Accounting is great to to get you in the door for work other than nursing while waiting as long as you have experience on that not just to have the degree there will be an employer that will catch their attention for that - further more - you'll be fine good luck on all the things you do! give me a shout if I can be of asssistance to you. - later!!

I agree. Try to focus on passing your NCLEX-RN exam. You don't have to attend review classes. It is just another expenses. Utilize the free online review like the nclex3500. I only used saunders, exam cram and la charity books. Maybe your family can help you with the expenses right now while studying for the exam. It is a lot of sacrifice not to work for several months but will be worth it once you pass your exam.
